Everything You Need To Know About Fire Safe Ball Valve
Fire safety is one of the most important safety protocols for any factory or industrial plant. The risk of fires breaking out in industrial environments is quite high, as many factories and power plants usually have flammable liquids in fuel pipes. Using fire-safe valves in industrial plants and factories is a reliable way of preventing fires and explosions. Types of fire-safe valves include gate valves and ball valves. Fire Safe Ball valves are more effective in controlling leaks in a pipeline that may lead to explosions or fires.
What is a Fire Safe Ball Valve and Why Is It Important
A fire-safe ball valve is capable of maintaining the pressure holding limits during and after the fire breaks out. Fire-safe Ball valves are specially constructed to reduce leakages downstream and prevent gas emissions so that the fire does not spread to other parts of the pipeline and engulf the whole system. When exposed to high temperatures, the fire-safe ball valve closes to isolate flammable liquid or gas and prevent it from coming in contact with any heat or fire. In fire-safe ball valve manufacture, certain design standards and quality specifications are crucial to be followed so that the valve can function properly in normal conditions and fulfill its purpose in case of a fire breakout.
Using an ordinary ball valve that is not fire-safe is a risk no one should take because if the fire erupts, it can cause flammable liquid to leak from the valve stem. The leakage would feed the fire, and the fire would expand further by overheating the system of pipelines.
How does Fire Safe Ball Valve prevent a Fire?
The design and construction of the fire-safe ball valve are focused on preventing two kinds of fuel leakages. One is the leakage before the fire and the other after the fire. In the event of a fire, fluid leakage can occur, either from the seat or the stem. Consequently, the construction of fire-safe ball valve design makes use of two types of designs.
The first type of design prevents leakage by using a fire-resistant component of the stem. The second kind of design involves utilizing a non-fire-resistant component like thermoplastic which eventually melts after exposure to fire, and then a secondary ball seal replaces the thermoplastic one to restrict the fire. The design using fire-resistant materials includes a metallic seat, graphite seat inserts, and graphite packing on the stem. The second design uses a thermoplastic stem and seat material such as PTFE.
In the thermoplastic design, once the fire reaches a high temperature of about 450 degrees Fahrenheit, the plastic seat melts and is automatically replaced by a metal which functions as the second seal. While at the stem also, the thermoplastic seal material is packed with a secondary, more durable material like graphite which locks into place if the fire succeeds in burning through the thermoplastic stem.
Fire Safe Ball Valve Under Normal Conditions
In normal temperature conditions, the fire-safe ball valve uses a ball with a bore at its center to open or shut the fluid flow in a pipe. Opening a valve is done by turning a handle 90 degrees clockwise. The handle is connected to the ball via a wall stem that rotates the ball. When the ball revolves at a 90-degree angle, it unblocks the pipeline, thus allowing fluid to flow. To block the pipeline, the handle is turned 90 degrees anticlockwise, which makes the ball perpendicular to fluid flow.
Methods Used to Manufacture Fire-Safe Ball Valves
Forging Method
A forged fire safety ball valve is constructed through the forging process. The forging process involves shaping the metal material while it is solid. Dies are used to giving shape and cut the metal to make the fire-safe valve. During the process, industrial tools and heat are used to fold and shape metal. Ball valves made through forging have solid strength giving them the ability to withstand high temperatures. Through the forging method, the structure of the metal is thinner, which makes it tolerant to high temperatures and, subsequently, less wear and tear during operation.
Casting Method
Casted fire-safe ball valves are made using the casting method. In this method, molten metal is used to design the ball valve. The metal is heated to its melting point, and the molten metal is transferred into molds. Once the metal cools and takes shape, it is then taken out from the mold. The casting method is less costly in comparison to the forging method as it requires less use of industrial cutting tools and machines and saves on electricity costs. The casting method is utilized to make fire safe ball valves in diverse and sophisticated shapes and sizes.
Kinds of Fire Safe Ball Valves
Single-piece fire safe ball valve
This kind of fire safe ball valve consists of one casted metal body. The single-piece casted body minimizes the possibility of fuel leakage. These ball valves are really cheap and affordable. Moreover, the ball valve cannot be repaired or cleaned, so once it develops a fault, it is usually disposed of and replaced. Replacing them is quite easy due to their wide availability and relatively cheap cost.
Two-piece fire safe ball valve
This type of ball valve has a two-piece body. One piece includes a metal body, including the valve with one side of the connection. The second piece is the trim and the second end connection which attaches to the main body. Unlike single-piece ball valves, the two-piece ball valve can be cleaned and mended in case of developing a fault. The ball valve is detached from the pipeline in order for it to be washed and repaired.
Three-piece fire safe ball valve
Three-piece ball valves are more expensive to purchase than either two-piece or one-piece ball valves. But they are easier to maintain and mend than a two-piece. All the components of three-piece safe ball valves can be removed and separated to inspect for any problem, which makes them quite easy to repair or replace a part. The three-piece valve is made up of three components, one body and two end joints screwed together by nuts and bolts.
In conclusion, we can say that a fire-safe ball valve is absolutely essential for a safe industrial environment. Due to their various shapes and types, fire-safe ball valves can easily be adapted to be used in a wide variety of industries, from oil and gas to waste management and power supply.
